MILLER ON THE MOVE AT ROLLING THUNDER

Saturday night the 15th November Damian Miller headed out to Rolling Thunder Raceway at Bacchus Marsh for Crash and Bash racing and came away fastest driver in the feature and with third place spoils.

The track at Rolling Thunder was heavily watered in order to last the evening with 4 race categories to hit the track. Miller who had never raced at the massive 550mtr track was very much looking forward to stretching his legs out on the race track. Prior to the race meeting Damian mentioned “The track looks huge, it should be great fun out there, we should be able to keep up great speed and have some fun with my passenger Tom McKenna. I feel we could finish in the top 10 tonight just with the engine we have.”

In heat one of the evening Miller started in eleventh on track and worked his way forward to finish in 7th spot. The first heat was unusual in that nobody could race on the track proper because of how wet it was so the team had to stick high up against the concrete playing follow the leader trying to work their way around the track and take advantage of mistakes in front of them.

Heat two the race track completely came into play and from a fourth spot starting position Miller worked his way into first and took the win and in a massive effort the # 56 Ramsdale Wreckers Commodore moved from 15th to first place in the third and final heat. This was a huge effort with 18 starters in each heat and Miller took the correct line that his competitors didn’t.

Come feature race time Damian Miller found himself on the front row in pole position. Passenger McKenna was looking forward to the 30 lap feature race. “Damo has driven so well tonight. This track is just huge and awesome to be racing on it’s got faster and faster. Never count out Batesy, he is behind us and will sneak up on you. Craig McKendry and Dale Smith are going to be fast also.

The feature race got underway and McKendry and Miller battled early before Miller took ascendency and the shot off into the lead putting distance between himself and McKendry. Lenny Bates Jnr started slowly however as the race progressed started to move forward. If it wasn’t for some caution laps, Miller was extending his lead and racing away from the field. In the process Miller recorded the fastest lap of the feature race.

The caution laps brought Miller back to Bates Jnr at the last restart and gave Bates the opportunity to be close enough to spin Miller around on the back straight sending him around and back into the clutches of the pack. Miller managed to keep going and did a fantastic job to drive on and get back into third spot behind Dale Smith. Bates took the win, however Miller took the plaudits with great heat victories, fastest time in the feature and a comeback to finish third after being spun.

Miller commented “My tyres had gone by about lap 15 and Batesy just reeled me in and tagged me. I’m really pleased with the result, the track was mint in the final and can’t wait to come back again. Congratulations to the winner and thanks to Tom McKenna for his help tonight as passenger and on the car.”

. Crash ‘n Bash Racing started in the late 1980’s. Cannonball Derby was the name it was known by back then. Crash ‘n Bash is a form of Motor Sport where contact is permitted on the track. The idea came from three members of Alexandra Speedway who proposed that Alexandra run a class that basically had no rules. The idea behind the proposal was to have a class that was cheap to get into and give spectators something to enjoy other than Demolition Derby. It was hoped that by keeping it cheap and simple this would attract new drivers into the speedway world. The rules were rough and ready and were modelled around Fender Benders or Standard Saloons, as they are known these days. This allowed this type of car an alternative after their season of racing had finished before reshelling for the next season.

The first ever meeting was held at Alexandra Speedway in 1986. 29 Cars entered for a 69-lap endurance race. Seymour Speedway liked the idea also and ran a 99-lap endurance race the following year. Cannonball Derby became an annual event at Alexandra, pulling huge crowds and having up to 200 cars per meeting
