Crash ‘n Bash Racing started in the late
1980’s. Cannonball Derby was the name it was known by back then. Crash ‘n Bash
is a form of Motor Sport where contact is permitted on the track. The idea came
from three members of Alexandra Speedway who proposed that Alexandra run a class
that basically had no rules. The idea behind the proposal was to have a class
that was cheap to get into and give spectators something to enjoy other than
Demolition Derby. It was hoped that by keeping it cheap and simple this would
attract new drivers into the speedway world. The rules were rough and ready and
were modelled around Fender Benders or Standard Saloons, as they are known these
days. This allowed this type of car an alternative after their season of racing
had finished before reshelling for the next season.
The first ever meeting was held at Alexandra Speedway in 1986. 29 Cars entered
for a 69-lap endurance race. Seymour Speedway liked the idea also and ran a
99-lap endurance race the following year. Cannonball Derby became an annual
event at Alexandra, pulling huge crowds and having up to 200 cars per meeting
